Long sleeve swimsuits: who they're for and how they should fit

Selection of long sleeve Davy J swimsuits as ghost mannequin images

I LOVE my long sleeve suit. There's a definite change that comes in early November, when the winter draws in and the temperature of the water seems to jolt down. That's when my trusty long sleeve suit and tops are in their element. They make the world of difference for warmth in the water, without me feeling like a wimp for reaching for the wetsuit.

Here's who they're for, and how to get the fit right.

Go long

A long sleeve swimsuit covers your arms, shoulders and core. It's for cold water, for wind on a paddleboard or boat, and for anyone who wants more coverage. It should fit close on the body, with sleeves long enough that you can reach forward without them pulling.

Who they're for

  • Cold water dippers. Arms and shoulders feel the chill early. A sleeve takes the edge off.
  • Paddleboarders and sailors. Out of the water, wind does the damage. A long sleeve top keeps it off wet skin.
  • Anyone who wants cover. From the sun, from the wind or simply because you prefer it.

Our three long sleeve pieces

Best for Fit
Bonded Long Sleeve Swimsuit Cold water dips and swims Close, in 1mm bonded fabric. Reversible, front zip
Bonded Long Sleeve Swim Top Layering over the swimsuits you already own Cut to layer, so it slips on over any style
Wrap Long Sleeve Swim Top Paddleboarding, sailing and summer cover, like a rash vest. In winter, a simple extra layer over your arms and core, without much added warmth Cropped and skimming, in quick-drying fabric

How it should fit

  • Body. Order your usual dress size. If you're long in the body, go up a size for extra length.
  • Sleeves. Ours are cut long on purpose, so tall swimmers can reach without the cuff riding up. If you have shorter arms, fold the cuff back.
  • Thumb holes. Pull them down over your hands for a cold swim, or over gloves. Leave them off when you don't need them.
  • The top. Think of the Bonded Swim Top as a layering piece for your swim wardrobe. It goes over the swimsuits you already have for extra warmth on your arms and core, and it tucks into high waist briefs to make a two-piece that looks like one.

Bonded sizes

XS is a 6, S is 8 to 10, M is 12 to 14, L is 14 to 16, XL is 16 to 18 and 2XL is 18 to 20.

One practical tip

A front zip swimsuit comes off quickly, which matters when you're changing on a beach. Wear a swim top or bikini top underneath and you can unzip without thinking about who's walking past.

Where to find them

All three are in our cold water collection while stock lasts. Not sure whether you need a bonded suit or a wetsuit? We compare the two here.
